Ost SEE is an online magazine with a focus on photography from the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
It was launched by us, Igor Trepeshchenok and Roman Drits, two photographers from Latvia, in March 2015. The magazine was born out of our personal interest in Latvian photography, culture, and history. The interest that has become even stronger after we’ve moved to other countries.
For many in the Baltic countries, the sea was a route to the west, a window on Europe. At some point, we both left Latvia and met after a few years in Hamburg. Here in Germany, we’ve found that the Baltic sea is called Die Ostsee, the Eastern Sea. We thought that “Ost SEE” would be a proper name for the magazine, now looking eastwards on our home country and the neighboring lands of Estonia and Lithuania.
Through the magazine we want to inquire into the phenomenon of Baltic photography; to see what makes it different and to learn what excites photographers from the region.
